Time for change!

In my mission to become the new Barack Obama, I’m planning on creating change today. I have a meeting which should, in theory, lead to some improvements in our Union, and hopefully it will show what Student Council should be doing.

I doubt it’ll be an easy meeting, but it will be productive, and it will beneficial to the students! I shall update on the outcome later!

On a more positive note; we have a new Faculty Rep for Business & Law, who will replace the one that has never turned up! :) I’ll be briefing her tonight ready for next week’s meeting and then I plan to go out tonight and enjoy ‘a few’ beverages!! In a responsible way of course ;)

My first Faculty Board meeting tomorrow… Long… Boring… Uninspiring… But I plan on changing that :)

Reality…

I seriously need to get my head back into books and refocus on my degree, that is why I’m here, right?

I love the Union stuff that I do, I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t, but I have tests and assessments starting to come at me again and I really don’t feel in a position to do any of them, eeeek.

On the other hand, nominations for elections close on Friday, which means that I have to finish all artwork for posters this week, and then sort out the website and all the other promo materials at the weekend, as well as going to work, and then on Monday, campaigning starts and it’s two weeks of campaign campaign campaign.

So I have to balance it all, but I’m starting to worry, I only just scraped a 2:1 in an assessment I got back today, I think it might be a sign of things to come. :(

So, in about three weeks time I’m going to be one very exhausted individual, but hopefully I’ll be a ‘Student Officer-Elect’

On top of this, Student Council is proving to be tough at the minute, I’m trying to do what I should be, but it’s certainly tough! Especially when dealing with individuals performance. In addition, I’m trying to support Amanda with the development of Council so that we get it to where it should be, and the local Student Media have spotted that Council needs work and they’re coming to the next Council as part of a feature, the outcome should prove to be interesting. They’re interviewing me as well, so on the up side, I might get a photo in Bullet! Which is a step up from being named in The Linc.

So…. problem after problem, or phrased better; challenge after challenge, but that’s what I seem to thrive on?

To top it all off, I miss my dog.

the journey to blogging.

Why blog? Why share my life with the world? Does anybody care?

Because I think I’m rather unique in my circle of friends, and I think this might provide some sort of insight into how I think, and what I do in the other half of my life; the Students’ Union half, and similarly to show what kind of person I am to those who I represent. Also… to share my thoughts, on local issues and on ‘more significant’ national / international issues. Does anybody care? Probably not, but you’re reading this now, so that’s a start.

I’m entering the world of student politics, which is new and quite daunting after coming from a background that very much non-political and where the general concensus is that ‘they’re all as bad as each other’. But this doesn’t really encompass what politics is? So I’m new to political aspect of representation, and I am certainly learning a lot, in all fairness; I’m making mistakes as well as achieving a number of successes in my work as a rep for students and I have no doubt that I still have a long long way to go before I confidently understand that whole world of representation and politics.

My loyalty is not with any political party, it is with the students at the University of Lincoln. Simple.

I believe in effective student representation and continue to champion it within my Students’ Union and within my University, hence me standing in the forthcoming elections for the position of Student Officer with a planned portfolio based around representation.

This blog will be a part of my journey, sharing my experiences and my thoughts with all. It won’t just be my experiences as a rep, but also just as a student, as a citizen and as an employee. It will be a chance to explore who I really am, for both the benefit of myself and the readers.

I hope that you will continue to check this page, particularly throughout the elections and please do feel free to get in touch and comment when you feel it necessary.

In unity,
Dan.
