Profile
DAN DERRICOTT
Having just finished a sabbatical, between the second and final year of my undergraduate degree (management & public relations), I have been and continue to be involved in the Higher Education sector primarily through that full-time role as Vice-President (Academic Affairs) at the University of Lincoln Students’ Union, but also through my ongoing involvement more widely with the Quality Assurance Agency and the National Union of Students. I am also involved in youth issues and policy as Trustee & Director of the British Youth Council, the national representative voice of young people in the UK on both domestic and international platforms.
My interests are in the student experience, particularly the academic elements; quality assurance & enhancement; research-engaged-teaching at undergraduate level;
I have particular interest in exploring how experience of first year undergraduates can be re-engineered to foster certain learner attitudes (moving away from an assessment focused mindset); encourage discovery of personal research interests; support learners to critically discover, understand and challenge knowledge; provide and encourage take-up of support for employability and personal development. In my opinion the first 10 weeks of the undergraduate degree are crucial and determine the success of the student, universities must ensure this time is demanding and more challenging than A-levels within a framework of tailored support.
My careers ambitions are within Higher Education administration, management & policy. I aim to progress towards a mixture of HEI senior management and HE sector body roles where I can contribute to maintaining the UK’s reputation for high quality HE and promote social mobility / equality of opportunity within education.
